Abuja Wastewater Treatment Plant – Nigeria
Design and construction of a metropolitan scale municipal WWTP
Location: Abuja, Nigeria
Project Type: Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP)
Client: Local Authority / Government Agencies
Project Status: Completed
Balasha Jalon Role: Full design services (preliminary and detailed design) and construction supervision
🟦 Project Overview
The Abuja Wastewater Treatment Plant, located in Nigeria’s capital city, was constructed in 2007 as part of the development of advanced urban infrastructure in a rapidly growing metropolitan area. At the time of its commissioning, the facility was designed to serve a population of approximately 700,000 residents, treating primarily high strength domestic wastewater.
The project constitutes a key component of Abuja’s urban infrastructure system and was developed to improve environmental quality and public health through reliable and advanced wastewater treatment.
🟦 Balasha Jalon’s Role
Balasha Jalon Infrastructure Systems Ltd. provided preliminary and detailed design services for the construction of the wastewater treatment plant, including civil, mechanical, electrical and control engineering, as well as construction stage supervision throughout the implementation phases.
🟦 Engineering Challenges
The project presented several significant challenges, including:
• Treatment of large volumes of high strength municipal wastewater
• Development of an advanced treatment facility in a rapidly developing capital city
• Compliance with stringent effluent quality standards
• Ensuring long term operational reliability and maintainability
🟦 Balasha Jalon’s Solution
The solution was based on an integrated design approach, which included:
• Implementation of an activated sludge process based on Low F/M – High SRT
• Design of large scale liquid and sludge treatment systems
• Integration of advanced aeration, clarification and disinfection systems
• A flexible and robust design enabling stable operation and efficient maintenance
🟦 Project Components – Liquid Treatment
Process Technology:
Activated sludge – Low F/M – High SRT
Main Components:
• Three Archimedean screw pumps, 2.4 m in diameter
• Coarse and fine screens
• Grit removal systems
• Aeration basins equipped with multiple aerators
• Clarifiers
• UV disinfection of treated effluent
The treated effluent is discharged into the adjacent river.
🟦 Project Components – Sludge Treatment
Process Technology:
Aerobic stabilization
Main Components:
• High SRT sludge stabilization basins
• Equalization tanks
• Belt filter presses
• Sludge drying beds
🟦 Key Design Parameters
• Average design flow: 131,200 m³/day
• Average BOD load: 66,000 kg/day
• Effluent quality: 15/20/10 (BOD / TSS / N)
🟦 Project Added Value
The project demonstrates Balasha Jalon’s experience in the design, supervision and delivery of large scale wastewater treatment facilities in the international arena, providing solutions tailored to site conditions, local regulatory requirements and the operational needs of a developing capital city.
