The Shafdan WWTP treats approximately 400,000 cubic meters per day of municipal wastewater, serving a population equivalent of 2.5 million, and is designed for biological nutrient removal (BNR).
In the past the waste activated sludge (WAS) was discharged to the sea through an outfall pipe. Due to a new environmental policy, the flow of WAS to the sea was stopped, and replaced with an alternative of sludge disposal.
The treatment includes:
- Sludge thickening by eleven (11) gravity belt thickeners (GBTs)
- Stabilization with thermophilic anaerobic digesters
- Dewatering by centrifuges
- Dewatered sludge removal by trucks from the dewatered sludge silos
Balasha-Jalon has prepared the general and detailed designs of the sludge thickening and dewatering facility. The design was based on 400,000 cubic meters of wastewater per day. The services included process, civil, mechanical electrical, control engineering, and general supervision of construction.
